The Bok victory in PE began with Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika

August 23, 2011

Just in case you were not in Port Elizabeth to catch the test match between the All Blacks and the Springboks, here are the National Anthems and the Haka.

The people of the Eastern Cape gave the Boks their support with a rousing rendition of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika.

The crowd then drowned out the Haka afterwards – welcome back to Port Elizabeth, the men in Black.

Will the Springboks be able to defend their World Cup title? The countdown began in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

If all goes according to plan the next time the All Blacks and the Springboks will play each other is in the semi final of the World Cup.

Titanic rugby battle in Port Elizabeth today

August 20, 2011

Rugby fever is high in the Eastern Cape as the Springboks and the All Blacks have arrived in Port Elizabeth for the Tri-Nations test match.

The last time South Africa played New Zealand in PE was in 1970. In a ruthless affair, the Springboks emerged victors by 14 – 3.

Frik du Preez sorting out an All Black in 1970 when rugby was rugby.

Back then the All Blacks had defeated the Boks in the second test of the series and pride was very much at stake in the PE test. 41 years later, a very similar situation exists.

Victor Matfield and his team have to show their supporters that they are ready for the World Cup. Anything less than a South African victory will simply not be good enough.

Frik du Preez was the enforcer of the Springbok team in 1970. He played with total commitment and brutal intent in the days when there were no TV cameras and citing commissions that have sanitised rugby today.

The All Black Chris Laidlaw was on the receiving end of a Du Preez tackle and a knuckle sandwich that saw Laidlaw stumble around the field in a daze. The tackle was regarded as a turning point in the entire series.

Bakkies Botha and the other Bok forwards are going to have to display the same passion today if South Africa is to beat their old foes.

The old Boet Erasmus stadium was known as the graveyard of visiting teams. Eastern Province had a reputation for always winning the fight, even if they lost the game in those days.

Will Bryan Habana rediscover his form today in Port Elizabeth?

The 1974 British Lions nearly came unstuck against EP as pitched battles broke out at the Boet and EP were given the task of softening up the 1980 British Lions when the first game of that tour took place in Port Elizabeth.

Schalk Burger senior, Pote Human and Dennis Campher were the hard men who fronted up to the Lions. The tone was set in that game and the Boks went on to win the series 3 – 1.

As the Springboks prepare to do battle for the first time in the new stadium, anything less than brutal intent and total commitment will be demanded by the Port Elizabeth fans who will be clamouring for a home town victory.

In the Eastern Cape, our blood is green!

International rugby coming to Port Elizabeth

April 14, 2011

Port Elizabeth has won the bid to host the South African leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series rugby tournament for the next five years.
The inaugural event will take place in early December this year. SARU said that Port Elizabeth went the extra mile to compile a bid that outshone the other cities.

Across the Eastern Cape politicians and officials also celebrated. Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC Xolisa Tom said this coup was an achievement for the whole Eastern Cape.

“We are so excited,” said Tom. “We really feel that we deserved this win, it is long overdue because the Eastern Cape is a rugby playing province and so many of our young people play rugby. We want our province to be seen as a sports events destination.”

Cheeky Watson who has been instrumental in turning around the fortunes of rugby in the Eastern Province is also very upbeat about the decision.

“This is a very exciting moment for Nelson Mandela Bay and the entire Eastern Cape. We are all very well aware that this is the heart and soul of black rugby and we are extremely excited that SARU, the IRB and the sponsors have chosen this region as the South African leg for the World Sevens Series.
Between the IRB Sevens and inclusion in the Olympics, we expect Sevens Rugby to sky-rocket in the region”, said Watson.

The economic spinoffs are expected to total R 80 million per year and the media spin off is huge and bodes well for Jeffreys Bay too.
Jeffreys Bay Tourism wants to position the town as the base to explore the surrounding attractions and the IRB Sevens is a perfect fit for this vision.

Andy Thysman, CEO of Jeffreys Bay Tourism said that the town will market itself to visitors who will be coming to watch the rugby. “We are close enough to Port Elizabeth to take advantage of the spin off.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire province and we can show case Jeffreys Bay to a new market and look forward to a cash flow injection into the town in the early December when things are traditionally rather quiet”, said Thysman.

EP Kings to be part of Super 16 rugby

September 1, 2010
Rugby match at Newlands. Stormers (Super 14).

Super rugby will not only be played in Cape Town as the EP Kings are set to make their Super rugby debut in 2013

The Eastern Province (Southern) Kings are set to play Super rugby in 2013.  However, the Eastern Cape franchise will not have to replace one of the five existing South African franchises as the Super 15 is set to become a Super 16 in three years’ time.

The Kings will then be the sixth South African franchise participating in the tournament. According to Sport24 has the proposal by South Africa at a SANZAR meeting had been accepted in principle by New Zealand and Australia.

The inclusion of the Kings, who will play in the South African conference, may mean that South African teams start their Super rugby campaigns two weeks earlier than usual.  The news will be welcomed by the Kings. They have been fighting for recognition as a Super rugby team for a number of years, but have had their participation postponed every time. The Kings can now continue to enlarge their player base and negotiate with sponsors.

The latest development is also good news for the South African Rugby Union (SARU), who gave the government an undertaking that the Eastern Cape would be incorporated in the mainstream of rugby.

The Super 15 of 2011 starts with teams from the respective countries first participating in derbies against one another before taking on overseas opponents.  The Bulls, Stormers, Lions, Cheetahs and Sharks will play each other home and away, while the same will happen in New Zealand.
