Thyspunt Nuclear Alliance Group

If you have any vested interests  in the Kouga area (J.BAY, CAPE ST FRANCIS, OYSTER BAY) then the Nuclear Info Document is one of the most important  you could ever read regarding the future of this area.

The Thuyspunt Nuclear Alliance Group (TNAG)  have highlighted a few of the most pertinent and obvious errors in the Environmental Impact Study.

TNAG has mobilized to attack Eskom with hard evidence to prove that their process and plan is flawed, and therefore unlawful.

THE SUM OF MONEY NEEDED TO SERIOUSLY CHALLENGE ESKOM IS SUBSTANTIAL. TNAG NEED TO RAISE R2 MILLION TO DO THIS PROPERLY, SO THEY NEED SUBSTANTIAL DONATIONS for this very real cause that affects every aspect of our social and environmental existence.

It is a sad truth, that justice comes at a price, but our health, safety, lifestyle and beautiful environment are worth protecting.

IF THIS PLANT GOES AHEAD, IT WILL BE ONE OF THE GREAT MISTAKES OF OUR TIME AND WE WILL ALL HAVE PLAYED OUR PART IN ALLOWING IT TO HAPPEN THROUGH OUR OWN INDIFFERENCE.

  1. [...] to the Thuyspunt Nuclear Alliance Group , during the building of the power plant, 6.37 million m3 of sand will be pumped into the ocean. [...]

  2. Tanja Lategan says:

Thanks for this article, Brenton. This sand and the warm water used to cool the reactor, when pumped into the sea, will interfere with the chokka spawning. Apparently chokka needs cool, clear water at a depth of 50m in which to spawn. The reactor will mean warm, murky, shallower water = major problems for the squid industry.
Then of course we will be facing worse traffic than the Jo’burgers – an astimated 1,350 vehicles on the road between PE and Cape St Francis every day for between 7 and 9 years, if not longer, with the resultant pollution, noise and dangers.. the list goes on

  3. hans anderson says:

all the anti nucs are cry babies
lot of their facts are unreliable and not scientifically proven
there are as many opinions on issues like sand, luke water ect as there are scientists

  4. Stan says:

    warm water’s ass…
I surf around koeberg, no warm murky water there.
and all the sand ? do you really think the sand does not move around already ?

You frothing hippies unplug from the grid first, and then come complain about electricity, but before you do that, try get the facts into your fuzzy logic brain first.

    • Janet says:

Your words are a direct reflection of your mentality which I am afriad is clearly fast asleep. If you were to actually think for yourself you would see that there is a whole lot at stake here, more even than the preservation of the planet you live on! South Africa is the perfect country to maximise the use of green energy – which is CHEAPEST and CLEANEST (this will save YOU money). Why do you think this country is building nuclear reactors then? SIMPLE. Someone stands to make a fortune from it and line a lot of political pockets on the way!! Duh! That’s a no-brainer. So, are you happy to have YOUR tax money spent on destructive technology (just look at Japan for heaven’s sake) so that some fatcat’s can get richer? Wake up, get over the pettiness of beliefs and opinions and see what is happening in fron t of your eyes with OUR money and OUR world.

    • Sean says:

      you surf around Koeberg?
      ’nuff said…

  5. Denzil says:

Please guys do your research properly before you complain. These power structures are designed by engineers who know what they are doing. Engineers are always looking for a cleaner why to do things.

Currently, South Africa mainly relies on coal to power our country. If you are unaware of the result of burning up large amounts of coal on a daily basis, just ask and I’ll get you a link.

Burning of coal releases large amounts of CO2 and sulphur into the atmosphere. Ever heard of global warming and acid rain? The use of coal will contribute to global warming in a much greater effect than nuclear power.

Nuclear power does not produce all these bad pollutants and we can actually have a healthy environment. New technology makes these stations very safe, and people can relax. You won’t get radiated or anything (it’s all shielded inside the plant). You can also drop your fears about the plant blowing up. The Chernobyl incident was caused because of low standards and bad technology, so we will be perfectly safe!

And to you surfers out there. Your surfing spots will be unaffected. Rest assured.

So please, think about this properly and safe our planet from pollutant coal before complaining about childish, imaginary fears about nuclear power.

  6. Jo Blogs says:

I think a lot of this paranoid attitude against nuclear power is just plain silly. The anti nuclear mumbo jumbos, havent a clue what theyre talking about, and what they think they do know, is all hearsay and gathered from other anti nukes opinions and imagined scenarios.Koeberg is an example of a highly successful project and has been running for nigh on 30 years with no serious problems. These so called Greens as they like to be called, jump upon every enviromental issue that comes up, more to be noticed than for any other reason I suspect.I hear escom is building a coal fired power station inland. I dont hear anything being said about that.Their reasons for not having a nuclear facility at Thyspunt are based on what IF.happened. U cant revolve your life around that kind of a standpoint. One could just as easily experience an earthquake here and the whole area being wiped out.

  7. Fred Kieck says:

    Sir

Two issues I want to mention:

Nuclear Power is the “cleanest” power available to us. I give my total support to ESKOM for the development of the Thuyspunt Nuclear powerplant. We in the Kouga area need major industries, and especially a major industry of this calibre. We need to “grow” the local economy, we have thousands of ableminded/bodied people without work. We need the national government to totally ignore capitalist tendencies (petitions), clearly implemented by a small group of previously advantaged individuals, and build industries that will benefit the unemployed collective.

Secondly, I want to request the organisers of the Kouga Express Women of The Year Awards to immediately discontinue the current competition. There are NO nominees of ‘color’ in the competition. I find this discriminatory and racist, and the organisers should be barred from staging such a supposedly prestigious competition in the future!

  8. Renee Royal says:

In response to the above comments, I do not think it is anti-nuclear….just not at that site, the power is needed at Koega so build it there. It does not make any sense to transport all the plant and labour to St Francis Bay, to build it on a eclogically and sensitive moving sand dune system and then multiple sets of high pylons and transmission lines from Oyster Bay along a tourism route and over dairy farming area back to PE. Build it at Koega.

  9. anthony says:

green peace welcomes nuclear and protest against coal fired powestations

  10. anthony says:

greenpeace for nuclear, against coal fire power staions

  11. marc says:

and dear anthony, greenpeace also claim hollow victories for work they have not done…

  12. Vaughan Bezuidenhout says:

    Forget Coal AND Nuclear Powerstations.
Solar Energy Farms AND Magnetic Generated Alternating Current will replace Coal And Nuclear Energy Sources.
Clean Energy with ZERO waste products.
When will we accept these basic solutions? Eskom’s profits will be 1000 times more if they “see the light”.

    Leave ThysPunt Alone…

  13. John Oram says:

Seriously who cares if escom makea a profit or not,I would happily see them go bust,They have been lying and cheating the public for far too long.and as for the fat cats who are supposed to “WORK” there fire them and kick their fat lazy arses out of there.

  14. [...] Thyspunt Alliance and other organizations like the Supertubes Surfing Foundation must be supported in their fight to [...]

  15. WHY THYSPUNT WILL GO AHEAD NO MATTER WHAT……….Pebble Bed nuclear tech.an innovation in this field and developed by ZA scientists has been ignored by the ANC in favour of way more expensive French tech.(the said scientists are leaving the country in droves)
Why …….because how are they going to cash in and inflate prices and give the contracts to their chommies – the French deal puts more in the trough for the suckers.
Mark my words ….all the above green n blue debate is frivolous – its about the ANC cashing in finishnklaar.

Fukushima Radioactivity is Everywhere All Over Northern Hemisphere and Every One is Already Contaminated to Some Degree

Recently President Obama ordered a complete news blackout of the flood ravaged crippled Fort Calhoun, Nebraska nuclear plant which is a symptom of the ongoing world wide cover up ‘of the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind’ ~ Fukushima.

It’s an election year and President Obama is determined that no bad news or a looming nuclear crisis will undermine his re-election as president in 2012. But the truth has a way of undermining the best of the worst deceptions.

For example, a shocking report prepared by Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (FAAE) on information provided to them by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states that the Obama regime has ordered a “total and complete” news blackout relating to any information regarding the near catastrophic meltdown of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant located in Nebraska.

According to the report “US Orders News Blackout Over Crippled Nebraska Nuclear Plant“, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant suffered a “catastrophic loss of cooling” to one of its idle spent fuel rod pools on 7 June after this plant was deluged with water caused by the historic flooding of the Missouri River which resulted in a fire causing the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to issue a “no-fly ban” over the area.

But that’s small potatoes compared to the on going Fukushima cover up for the Fukushima deception continues unabated and a world wide health crisis is looming

What a decent write up for a change !!! – I would like to challenge Eskom to apologise for proposing such a ridiculous site – and in reparation for their impractical excuse to use real estate that they already own simply because it is an asset that they already have and is thus a “cheap” way forward – they and the government should finance a Technical college for J.Bay and with a view to a College or University in the distant future .
All powered by Wind and / or Solar power
    - Now that is how you start up a town properly without destroying it with blatant industrialisation .

This can be funded by the huge expense it would take to conduit and cable the resultant ( Nuke ) Energy from Thyspunt to P.E. and surrounds ( it will probably get stolen by the unemployed Nuke construction workers anyway ) . .
A far better option would be for them to invest in a decent sized stable property between P.E. and East London – far enouph from both to be no immediate danger to either town or sensitive environment , near the new harbour where it is needed – then they can create all the industry that they wish … employment for all with greater prospects of permanent sustainable industrialisation – unemployment in the townships between Grahamstown and P.E. will be almost 0) .and hopefully the infrastructure to procure and safeguard against Nulear Melt down will be close enough to prevent it !!
Far better would be to go only for wind power … or … investigate new forms of sustainable energy production – with good science anything is possible !!
All of the best for now – Have a great Christmas and an amazing New Year !!!

People in the movement make it sound like they are fighting the old apartheid movement. Its a freaking power-plant america have got something like a 152 of them and they seem fine, also i think that the above mentioned freedom fighters are content with not being part of any progress in the area and with that in mind doesn’t care about the community the power-plant will create thousands of jobs and not only boost j bay’s economy but also the eastern cape’s.so please grow up and start looking at the bigger picture.

As an engineer, I am for cleaner electricity and I support nuclear / wind / solar programmes instead of coal. All the opinions of radiation, sand dunes, silted supertubes etc. aside, has anyone ever thought about what happens to an area where such a huge development is about to take place? The Cape St. Francis area is one of the most beautiful areas you can imagine… Now imagine it becomming an industrial area such as Couga with all the support structures it requires – filling stations, malls, residential developments etc. There must be an alternative to the site at Thyspunt that can be used that will not be impacted by a new industrial development. Even if it is still in the greater PE area. I think what is important is not whether a nuclear electicity site is to be developed, but rather where it has the least impact on the ever decreasing beautiful remote areas. So as one of the earlier replies states “please grow up and start looking at the bigger picture” and think about future generations and not your own immediate financial greed. “There are non so blind as those that will not see” – Anon
